Straight-line winds blow through central Arkansas, bring down trees, power lines

"Things was flying off the walls and glass was breaking everywhere, but the only thought in my head was 'I need to get to my kids.'"

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - People in Saline, Lonoke and Pulaski counties are cleaning up after powerful storms blew through Central Arkansas early Saturday morning.

Downed trees, power lines and other debris lined Mann Road, off of Hwy. 111, in Alexander.

According to the National Weather Service, significant damage was contained to a small area that resulted from straight-line winds that reached 60 to 70 mph.

Anthony Apellido, his wife and two young children were sleeping when the storm came through around 5:30 a.m.

"I heard rain start hitting, hail start hitting and then the next thing I know it sounded like a freight train coming toward our house," Apellido said. "I jumped out of bed and my first thought was to go find my kids."

Winds blew Apellido's mobile home off its foundation and ripped off the roof.

"Things was flying off the walls and glass was breaking everywhere, but the only thought in my head was 'I need to get to my kids.'"

Other than cuts on his feet from broken glass, Apellido and his family made it out unscathed. Their house is a different story.

"There's so much stuff that we lost. I don't even know where to begin," he said.

Further down Mann Road, a woman said she woke up to the sound of roaring winds which prompted her to leave the bedroom. She said a tree then crashed through the roof, landing where she slept just seconds before.

"The limbs were actually sticking in my daughter-in-law's bed," Bobby Henley said. "It was horribly scary."

The woman's daughter slept in an adjacent room. Though the house sustained significant damage, the family escaped without injury.

"This could've been a tragedy," said Henley, adding that God was looking out for his family that morning.

The American Red Cross is assisting those impacted by the storms.

"Stuff is replaceable," Apellido said. "Our lives are not replaceable."
