King Elementary surprises a 67-year-old man | Craig's Reading Roadtrip

The latest stop on Craig O'Neill's reading roadtrip takes us to King Elementary.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - If you watch THV11, you know Craig O’Neill. He’s currently on a reading roadtrip to public schools in Pulaski County.

This is in hopes of boosting the love and joy of reading. At King Elementary, third graders surprised him by doing something he’d never seen in all his years of reading to kids.

He read the book, “Rosie Sprout’s Time to Shine.” A book he has read several times on tour. But, when he would give a line of dialogue, the third graders would shout out a category of where that fit in conversation.

For example, when Violet, a character in the book said, “My plant is still the sparkliest!” A kid yells, “That’s a judgement!” And so, it would continue throughout the whole reading.

Rude? No. Brilliant! It was obvious the class had been studying sentence structure and meaning and they had just come from a test.

It was still fresh in their minds and they were applying what they’d learned to the book they were hearing. We call that, practical application. What a great way to get surprised!
