Arkansas gears up for 'March for Our Lives'

Along with the march in Washington D.C., people will take to the streets in 800 other communities worldwide on March 24.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Thousands of people, including some from Central Arkansas, will join with students in Washington D.C. Saturday for the "March for Our Lives."

The march was organized in response to the February shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.

On Thursday, Richard Wright and his wife left their home in Jacksonville, AR. They will drive to Connecticut to pick up their grandchildren, ages 13 and 18, then head to Washington, D.C. for Saturday's march.

"It's going to be an event that's going to be remembered for a long time," Wright told THV11 Thursday, March 22 during a stop in West Virginia.

Wright said he began planning his trip to D.C. after hearing survivors’ cries for reform in the days right after the shooting.

"I saw those kids come on [TV] and thought 'maybe they're going to turn the tide,'" Wright said. "They mentioned this march and something just struck me."

He believes it's especially important for his grandchildren to attend the rally.

"It's kind of a once in a lifetime experience to teach them something about civics, something about voting, something about the importance of what they can do," Wright said.

Along with the march in Washington D.C., people will take to the streets in 800 other communities worldwide Saturday, March 24. That includes Little Rock where more than 1,000 people are expected to mark up Capitol Avenue and rally outside the State Capital.

Marches are also planned in Jonesboro, Bentonville and Fort Smith.

THV11 will have comprehensive coverage of the marches happening in Arkansas and across the nation. If you are from Central Arkansas and planning to attend the March for our Lives in Washington D.C., please let us know by emailing news@thv11.com.
